They were performing with the Handmade Parade in Hebden bridge.

I was absolutely in awe and the drumming was so powerful!

They were jaw dropping and I’ll never forget the way I felt as I watched them march through town.

I said to my partner ‘I’m getting in on that one day!’

There’s something really hypnotic and primal about the sound and rhythm of the players.

Then life takes over. I’m a mum of 3 amazing kids, a midwife and a small business owner with my fella. Busy busy busy and as such don’t have hobbies or ‘me’ time. I've struggled over the years with MH but following the pandemic I really had time to think about what matters to me most.

My family and friends are incredible but I still needed something just for me!

Then Drum Machine(dM) had a workshop in Hebden park. My 16 year old daughter egged me on to have a go (and it took a fair whack of courage) so I did. Well! That was it. I was hooked.

I signed up to the workshop not knowing anyone and jumped straight in.

Aid, Ed and Kati were there and were so welcoming.

My first workshop rehearsal was ace! I was hooked.

But what I didn’t see coming was just how much I get out of being part of this band.

One night a week I go to rehearsals. (I literally look forward to this every week!) and am meeting some brilliant people.

It’s 3 hours of absolute drum therapy and company with these brilliant folk. (Like seriously, your ace 🥳) and I’m beginning to feel like a part of something bigger 😊

Life can be super duper stressful particularly if its been a challenging week at my job, but drumming literally pushes the stresses away and I feel refreshed and ready to face anything the world wants to throw at me.

I love it.

I’ve performed now at 2 events with dM, a street gig in Doncaster and a club gig, Boombox Circus in Leeds and am so excited to be going to my first festival (I know age 38 but better late than never) to perform.

I loved watching the crowd have that same buzz I did when I first saw dM.

I'm looking forward to many more gigs and fun times with you all! 💜 thank you being what you all are! 🙌🏼

PS If you would like to have a go at playing with Drum Machine, the best way is to join one of our 4 week courses. No experience is necessary and all experience levels are welcome. The course runs on Monday nights in at the beautiful venue that is Fielden Hall in Todmorden.

Finally...

After 18 months, we were able to get back on stage.

Back to performing.

And what a gig it was.

We were booked in to play at The Old Woollen in Farsley nearer the end of the year, but I was called mid week by Choque Hosein, a good friend of mine and total Leeds head.

Choque is the man behind Black Star Liner. He has taught me more about attention to detail and patience, than any other.

He called me up and said, “What you doing Saturday?”

Before I could answer, he asks if we can play at Glitter Bomb, at The Old Woollen.

The amazing band booked, Cut Capers had had to self isolate.....

Could we do it?

I didn’t hesitate. YES YES YES.

Desperate to get back out there.

So much has happened in the last 18 months.

So much for me personally and for the band as a whole.

The collective experiences of both went into that gig last Saturday.

I spent a lot of time on lockdown, discovering and falling in love with Jacob Collier.

One of THE best British musicians EVER.

Not only a master, Jedi musician but he knows the art of connection with audience like no other.

I learnt so much watching him night after night and I knew that the future of music came with a new responsibility.

That of re connecting the people.

We have all been damaged in so many different ways due to the pandemic and I feel it's part of my role now... part of our role at dM HQ, to do our duty and heal in any way we can.

I had the set worked out and knew that audience participation being part of the set would be high on the agenda.

I wanted to hand out hand percussion and get people involved.

But people are rightly concerned about infection, so we scrubbed down our bits and my partner Kaz McKnight kindly donned a full boiler suit, paint sprayers face mask, goggles, rubber gloves and wellies and handed out things to hit.

The take up from the audience was instant.

They took to it immediately.

No hesitation what so ever.

Perhaps yearning for some kind of connection.

Personally, I think all musicians need to pick up that responsibility, but drummers in particular.

What Drum Machine does creates an immediate, easy access way to communicate.

Talk through the power of rhythm and repetition.

IT'S OUR DUTY.

Needless to say, myself and the whole band had a mind blowing experience and judging from the audience reaction during and after the gig, I know they did too.

Even Choque, who is a very difficult man to impress, said it was a special

performance: “A real show”

I have felt the bands and my own personal evolution over lock down.....

And we were like a coiled spring on that stage.

So we are ready now to spread our love and healing through rhythm, repetition and connection.

So come see us whenever you can.

We will be ready for you.

Love n Light to ALL

We immediately started to think that maybe even this new space was not going to be enough, as we want to do so much.

I will list all the amazing things that are happening for dM:

We are setting up a CIC, (community interest company) not for profit business called What Is Drum.

What is Drum aims to deliver rhythm and music based workshops and courses to a new section of our communities.

There will be a young persons Drum Machine, called Micro Machines, lead by our very own Ed Wells, an incredible energy, dM player and top friend.

There will also be a young persons brass band to accompany Micro Machines. And we have non other than Mr Atholl Ransome, sax player for Amy Whinehouse, Mark Ronson and Klonk, Founder member of the Haggis Horns and all round good egg.

We will deliver workshops to people in the mental health sector, single parents, recovering addicts, the elderly and who ever else needs some rhythmic healing.

We have plans for cool contempt community choirs, dance groups, live music events……

We aim to create a real community hub.

A place where you can heal yourself and others, communicate and explore with the guidance of inspirational individuals.

And with some of the energies that have been drawn to us, we already have an amazing group of heads and experience to sit on the CIC (community interest company) board, along with 2 funder finders.

Long term with the CIC, we aim to secure our own building and when that happens……

BOOM watch out.

As mentioned, in the LOCKED IN: PART 1 blog, Drum Machine released a new video, showing off its new costumes and drums.

On the strength of that video we were contacted by db Morgan. An amazing up and coming British Film maker. Now on his 3rd feature film, with MTV movie awards under his belt. We were asked to be in a scene in his new film in Clacton-On-Sea, Morris Men and off the back of that, myself and Dom, (db Morgan) have become good friends and I am working on sound tracks to 3 of his films.

And then…….

drum roll please…….

We were rehearsing about 2 months ago now and in walks a total stranger.

He said, “I’m a record producer and I heard the sound of the drums so had to come and check out what it was.”

In Hebden Bridge, every other person is a potential record producer, so I was welcoming to him but skeptical of his introduction……

I chatted to the guy in our break and it was only Simon Bleedin Ellis. Brit award winning songwriter, producer and MD to the biggest names in stadium pop. Britney Spears. Spice Girls. West Life. He has done so much and is an amazing energy and talent.

Drum Machine drew him in and now i am working quite closely with him on the sound tracks for db Morgans films and other projects. We have a lot in common and i feel i have found a real kindred spirit. He loves drum machine and all it stands for. And he is inspiring me to stretch higher.

I know that when the doors to venues open again and he hits the road in those stadiums, that Drum Machine will be included somehow.

So the lockdown outcome for Drum Machine as an organisation has been amazing.

I know that for the individual players, without whom there would be no drum machine, lockdown has been hard for may reason.

And I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of them for their relentless, ongoing moral and financial support throughout these testing times.

And as I have been name checking through out this as a mark of respect to the energies involved, I can’t go without mentioning the one driving force behind dM and what is to be the CIC: the relentless energy of, amazing radiant character and face of the business, Kati Edwards. To quote Lord of the Rings, 'she is a light when all others go out and you find yourself in darkness.'

And Thanks to all who have stood by us, believed in us and seen our potential.

WE HAVE LANDED

Stay tuned coz who knows what is coming next.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

Where does one start to try to explain or understand the weirdness that has been and continues to be 2020.

I will try to leave my personal journey out of this although it will inevitably bleed in as my physical, mental and spiritual well-being are intrinsically connected to Drum Machine.

We, like everyone else in the UK and almost the world, went into a full lockdown in March of 2020. The world closed. Businesses, shops, schools, gyms, community centres, pubs, clubs, venues, festivals…… EVERYTHING closed down and myself, like most who lost their revenue stream, focused on preservation of self and family.

I feel its enough to say that it was tough. It feels to me like we have all been tested and pushed to a point where you either sink or swim.

Drum Machine, like all other businesses, accepted the lockdown and everything ground to a halt. No rehearsals, no gigs, no workshops and we did what most others did and descended into a world of zoom meetings. They were the only way for us all to stay connected.

We did manage to keep ourselves busy on some level during the months by giving the band and the drums a new look. We also shot a new video with the help of a new film and media crew that are on board with us now. Check it here.

When lockdown ended in its first stages, by that I mean shops and pubs and community centres reopened and we were allowed to rehearse again under strict c-19 guidelines, a very strange set of events happened which has turned out to be the most positive thing that has ever happened to Drum Machine and myself.

Since our beginning, we have rehearsed at Salem Community Centre in the beautiful West Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge. The room we used was quite small. When we had 40 players in there it was tight.

To enable us and other building users to come back, the manager of the centre decided to move everyone up too the huge room and the top of the building. I resisted a little because i knew there would be some work required to sound proof the windows, but we had no choice.

So we set to work and a few of the players lead by Dave Edwards and designed by Adam Tennant (both bass players in Drum Machine) constructed huge shutters with soundproofing attached to cover the 9 massive windows in that room.

We moved upstairs into a space that could easily get 40 players in 2 metres apart and where we were able to adhere fully to all C-19 guidelines.

Literally overnight, I felt like we had been pot bound for years in the small room limited by its size as to where our creative energy could go.

Now, all of sudden we had this huge space and doors started to open. Because there were fewer users in the building, we were able to secure a second night in that room and launched a new rolling Drum Machine course.

We didn’t really know what the take up would be and were delighted when we found ourselves overwhelmed with the response. We expected about 20. We got over 70 people apply.

We now run 2 courses on Thursday nights with 20 people in each and we have another 20 on the waiting list. It was obvious that the people really needed something. And I stepped back into my favourite role, that of being a teacher.

I have long since been convinced of the healing power of repetition.

It is what united us all together on the dance floors of the late 80’s, 90’s and beyond. A reclaiming of a lost energy.

And I started to see myself more as a healer than a performer.

Aid X

So what's it about?

Morris dancing is an integral part of English folk culture, although the origins of the ‘dance’ are far more intriguing.

History is renowned for rewriting itself for the comfort of the masses.

Hidden within the entertainment spectacle of ‘traditional Morris dancing’ sides, each guild adopted their own dance and martial art style based on ancient warrior techniques learned, and passed down over time, from the combined skills of Eskrima, Capoeira, Wing chun, Krav Maga and Ninjitsu.

These skills, forms and techniques were infused into the particular dance and fighting styles of regional sides.

Studying modern Morris dancing, a keen eye will observe the inclusion of many, or all, of these fighting style elements.

You are witnessing the result of more than 750 years of the evolution of a secret assassin’s guild!’

We can safely say, we can’t wait to be involved!

There haven't been any gigs so we are all missing playing out!

On the upside, we have been back at rehearsals for 2 weeks now and have a new fantastic space in Hebden Bridge.

It's much bigger so we can all socially distance and adhere to guidelines.

And we have a new 4 week new starter course on Thursday nights 7-8.30PM

No experience necessary.

And accommodates experienced players also.

dM Courses

Each course lasts 4 weeks, which covers one module.

Each module will explore the amazing power of repetition and how we achieve that, through commitment to the groove, technique and intent.

Module 1. Rolling Drum & Bass.

Module 2. Heavy 6/8. (swung techno)

Module 3. 4 to the floor, house/techno/breaks

It doesn't matter which module you start on, as it just keeps rolling over.

Most will be expected to complete all 3 modules before being considered for the performing band.

Alternatively you could just do one module…. Or continue doing all 3 over and over.

It is £60 waged, £50 concession.

All course participants will receive access to our online learning channel so you can practice the grooves at home between sessions.

Because it’s a rolling course, most people will be given the option to stay on for another 4 weeks.

This creates a ‘waiting list’ system. We will add you to our waiting list and contact you as a place becomes available.

If you would like to do the course, please let us know by emailing play@drummachine.org.uk

Come play!

What a horrific year it has been for the so many people.

So many jobs and careers gone.

A time when live music is on it’s knees and the country we live in is divided in so many ways.

Conspiracies flying everywhere.

To me, that is people desperate to find the truth.

To find A truth that makes sense to them.

I can relate to that.

We all want the truth

The reality is that communities are now broken with as many unseen lines.

Masks?

No masks?

Real?

Not real?

BLM?

No BLM?

We are fighting amongst ourselves.

So as I try to carve a path through these trouble landscapes, I turn to the thing I know heals the people.

The thing I know heals communities.

The thing that needs no language.

HYPNOTIC. REPETITIVE. GROOVE. REPEAT.

HYPNOTIC. REPETITIVE. GROOVE. REPEAT.

HYPNOTIC. REPETITIVE. GROOVE. REPEAT.

HYPNOTIC. REPETITIVE. GROOVE. REPEAT.

Drum Machine are committed to getting that healing, funky ass groove out on to the streets and getting the people involved.

There is some real healing that happens when you actually become part of the groove.

Its one thing to dance to it, or to feel it, but to be providing it is a different experience all together.

During lockdown, we got stuck in.

(So lucky we are to have such a plethora skills within the band.)

For me, seeing Drum Machine for the first time, it felt like a soundtrack to a new beginning after the end of the world.

Primal, crazy, but joyous

I had never heard a sound like it

Live drummers all moving together

Like something out of a mad max rave scene

Some smiley, some mean.

All drums

Only drums

Formation like a samba band but not samba

Their own genre

So funky and so tight

I couldn't work out where the sound was coming from

Or who was playing what.

Or whether they had real jobs.

Or whether this was their job

Were they even human?

They were so very cool.

I hadn't danced that hard for a long time

What does Drum Machine mean to me?

Well I don't think it's overly dramatic to say that Drum Machine probably helped to save my life.

I've had some very dark times in the last 10 years and Drum Machine was the one thing that got me through.

Even when I couldn't leave the house just to go to the shops or do anything productive, I made an effort every Wednesday to get to Drum Machine because it feeds my soul.

Being part of Drum Machine has not just given me some of the best ever times performing but it's given me some of the best times of my life.

Standing up at the front of the band on the main stage at Beatherder when Aid couldn't lead the band, that was a moment of absolute joy.

That was in my top 3 of lifetime moments ever.

So thank you Drum Machine.

And thank you Aid.

What strange times we currently live in and what very strange times for our children.

What has happened with the band has been heart warming and has shown me what an amazing extended family we have around us.

We set up a zoom meeting for the first week and they have continued every Wednesday at rehearsal time.

Some weeks just to catch up and chat and other weeks we have had some stick practice and drumming exercises.

The Drum Machine Learning Channel

Before the lockdown came into force, myself and Kati had been planning and filming for a new Drum Machine learning channel. A place where you can check in any time you like and get tips on technique and sticking and where you can play along to whole Drum Machine (dM) tracks.

We have now LAUNCHED that and you can find on our website homepage www.drummachine.org.uk.

At the moment, the learning channel is just for the players in Drum Machine and people who began our last intro course in March which, of course, we have had to postpone.

But we have had a few requests for non players who would like to learn to play dM tunes and improve their sticking and accuracy so we will be rolling the learning channel out soon to non dM subscribers.

Once the lockdown kicked in, I got requests from players in the band to do little learning videos for drum kit……. and now being asked for vids on songwriting, arrangements and melodies, on guitar, bass, piano and ukelele.

So watch out for some of those. they will be coming soon.

I hope everyone out there is managing to keep it together for yourselves and all our children.

Love will always win. ALWAYS.

And the drum and all its amazing possibilities is a healer, as are you.

Combine the 2 together….. BOOM.

Whatever comes out of the other side of this, we will be ready for.

Love to all

It was great for it to be back at Salem. All the drums are there and it does feel like home.

We have been there for near on 10 years now.

Check out this video... They were playing like this after only their first class with us...

20 new people, all hungry for rhythm and communication.

We have a really great bunch of people on the course.

All there ready to commit to what we offer.

All responsive.

All learning.

We focused on what roll the bass drums play in our sound.

Where we put the notes on the drum, with some explanation as to how we get those notes, as non players.

And if you want to know that, then you will have to join one of our courses. LOL

Throw in some relentless repetition and we had a very powerful and uplifting groove going on.

Allowed that to inform a mini arrangement, which we could have gigged with, it was that tight.

Everyone enjoyed it and we had some great feedback at the end.

It was perhaps the coldest gig we've EVER done.

Definitely. character. building!

We all braved the pelting rain and the icy winds as we played the gig last Saturday at The People Play Party held at The Piece Hall in Halifax.

As Aid said in the our blog, "there is something very primal about playing drums in the rain."

On Saturday, no one could feel their hands. It's not an easy task to hold a pair of drum sticks, maintain the grooves and keep time when you've no feeling in your hands!

I'd been thinking that others WOULD be able to feel their hands like they have some super human quality.

But no, numb hands was a typical sensation it turns out.

It was incredible there was a crowd who stayed to watch us in the freezing cold and driving rain; a huge testament to the spirit of dM and our

supporters!

Here's Jill B with a few words on her FIRST gig with Drum Machine.

"It was sensational! Thank you so much!

First gig for me with Drum Machine....beyond awesome!

Totally exhilarating enhanced by the intense cold and sunshine at 4pm and then at 6pm rain illuminated by the amazing lights, soaked to the skin, all of us

putting our hearts and souls into the drumming, It bordered on some fabulous Dionysian ritual!

Oh yes loved it all!

Thank you very much.

See you all on Wednesday at rehearsals!"

Jill Barker

Amazing!

I love how Jill puts the experience into words.

And here's Jaden Adams on being in Drum Machine...

Jaden's family were out in force to support Jaden's first Drum Machine performance.

Every time I looked at them in the audience they were grinning from ear to ear, proper proud of Jaden. And rightly so!

They were clearly buzzing from all they saw and heard.

We got some snaps of Jaden's nan and Jaden's sister.

Jayden says,

"I really enjoy everyone in Drum Machine.

There are some really special people together all in one place.

I enjoy connecting with everyone; makes me feel a sense of community we lack nowadays.

I feel good about my first gig.

It was a fun start to the journey with Drum Machine.

I'm looking forward to getting familiar with the different sounds and more confident.

Thanks everyone!"

Jaden Adams

Just brilliant!!

So a huge thank you to Jill and Jaden for your words for the blog and bringing the fabulous energy you bring to Drum Machine!!

Here goes...

"It's always lovely when a venue invite you back.

Especially if it's a beautiful and local venue like The Piece Hall in Halifax.

We last played there at the New Years Eve 2018 event.

What an incredible space.

And the team there always light it well and stage things that work so well in the space.

This time we were here for The People's Play Party launched a sculpture exhibition by Alice Irwin; abstract metal characters with really cool projections by

Illuminos bringing them more to life and kids were climbing all over them in the square.

Drum Machine were asked to provide a sound track for the exhibition launch which of course we were happy to do.

We had 2 sets.

One at 4pm with no projections and in the sun (ish)

This set was fun.

We took some percussion instruments and invited the kids to play percussion with us during the set.

Half way through and a few parents were groovin with us on bells also.

It was great response from the audience.

The second set at 6pm.

With dusk behind us, the projections rolling and the heavens wide open, throwing a torrent of rain at us and the hardy crowd that stayed and danced.

There is something very primal for me playing drums in the rain.

Taps into something deep.

Hands were colder than ever.

I couldn’t feel my thumbs and had to take on a very unorthodox way of holding the sticks…..

A bit like Oliver Twist with his knife and fork.

But whatever works, right ?

It was great. The projections looked amazing and there was a kind of, ‘we’re in it together’ type energy between us and the crowd as the rain and sleet bounced of the drums and players.

There was a bit of audience participation, but to be fair most people were bouncing for body heat.

Throughout the whole day we had Luke & Ryan from Entheos Media Group who we are making a documentary with us about the creation and life line of Drum Machine.

They were interviewing, players, audience members and players kids and of course filming the performance, so watch out for a small clip of that to come soon.

It was a blast.

All in all another great day on the streets of the UK."

And a double exciting moment for seven of our new players as it was to be their first gig.

Check out this video of the day... Watch til the end. We instigated a massive dance party and it was EPIC!

We had two jobs:

First was to head the march of 300 Vikings through the centre of York.

We lead off, smashing out our relentless techno monsters to keep it moving as quickly as possible, with the roar of (literally) an army behind us.

So many people on the street facing up to the fierce wind and cold. All of them cheering both band and warriors as we passed by.

The parade ended with a huge bottle neck of parade watchers, shoppers, drummers and vikings.

It was a sight to behold.

After which, we thought it only fitting that we all go to the nearest ale sale establishment and also the biggest, as there was 30 odd of us, and sample the mede….. or something similar.

Once we were settled in, my 7yr old daughter, Ume, set about doing her 1 minute portraits of the band, (for a small contribution of course.) This one is of Joe, one of our snare players. I think she nailed him.

Our second job, was to be a part of the finale of the 2 week festival.

A 10 scene outdoor presentation, with all 300 of the Vikings, acting out a particular part of Viking history, finishing with a burning boat burial, a huge battle, (obviously) and 35 Drum Machiners laying down the grooves…… but alas, the viscous Yorkshire weather had different plans and much to lots of peoples misery, the event had to be cancelled. So we were then 35 players ready to gig, with no gig…..

So we decided that rather than pack up and go home, we would stay, brave the weather and push on to play.

We found a great spot in the city centre with the help of the Jorvik team, (who were brilliant the whole day) and started playing.

We very quickly drew a large crowd that circled us. We did a killer set for about half an hour. With about 10 mins to go, I decided we needed a ‘party’ so I started to invite people out the audience to come and dance……

There were not many takers, until one lady stepped forward.

It only needed one and then the rest followed.

We ended up with at least 30 odd people jumping and dancing, turning it into an outdoor dancefloor and we played on.

All finished with a thunderous ending and thunderous applause.

The new players were immediately hooked on the vibe of, performance energy and were suitably congratulated by us old timers.

Great day. Great gigs.

Thanks you York and the Jorvik Viking Centre, especially Gareth and Emily and the guys at Dig.

AND ONE MORE THING...

Drum Machinetag:drummachine.org.uk,2005:Post/62130452020-02-17T23:21:06+00:002020-02-17T23:21:06+00:00Being In The Band: Bass Player Julie Alani Tells Us Why She's In Drum Machine!
I’ve had a calling to drum for some years and having never heard or seen Drum machine before, initially it felt like I’d fallen across Drum Machine almost by accident.

My friend asked me if wanted to go along with her to an 8 week drumming course.

I had no idea it was to audition for the band!

I managed to get child care covered and was very grateful for this...... but by week 5, the energy created by Aid‘s phenomenal grooves was amazing and I thought to myself,

“I am being in this band, there’s no way I’m not!”

Thankfully, at the end of the course, I got the message to say I was IN, and to say I was over the moon is an understatement!

Now I know it was meant to be, as Drum Machine has since formed a fundamental part of my life’s journey.

Drum Machine has also opened up social opportunities. I’ve made some beautiful new friends for both myself and my daughter who has special needs.

Everyday she gets the school bus, and as such, there are no school gate meetings of parents to arrange play dates, sleepovers and sadly she doesn't receive party invites. It's most likely the same for many parents of special needs children.

As an older, single mum/carer, my oldest and closest friendships have dwindled somewhat, due to being at different life stages and paths. The big friendship circle I’d always had, had diminished.

I am fortunate to now get respite and use it mainly on child care so that I can be part of the band. It makes me so happy when I can commit to a number of DM’s gigs and performances.

Being part of Drum Machine Allows me just to be ME the person ❣️not me the mum, not me the carer, not me the sole responsible one.

It gives me something to be part of that’s reliable, regular and fun and gives me a sense of belonging.

It’s great to share a common interest and the love of drumming with others, it makes everything else feel irrelevant in the moment, if only for the time that you're there.

If you arrive to rehearsals feeling tired or down, or you’ve had a bad day, once the beats ricochet through your body, you’re sure to leave feeling like your dancing on the ceiling,

It is absolutely the most healthy outlet I believe I could have found, it’s addictive.

So my dedication and commitment to Drum Machine has multi purposes in my life and serves me on many levels.

I’ve found a big part of me again❣️

Although somewhat like a crazy family, I love the DM crew and two and and half years on I can’t imagine my life without them now.

It keeps me sane.....well almost?

So a huge thank you to our Julie for writing for the dM blog. We all come to Drum Machine though our different life journey's for all different reasons and I hope your story will inspire someone who is looking for a new outlet or hobby to come and give Drum Machine a try. We love you Julie <3

* We have new costume designed by Sally Stone of The Leeds Playhouse and custom printed material designed by Leeds based Master Printer Joe Duffield.

* We've painted the drums matt black and they look cool

* We have NEW tunes sounding tighter and funkier than ever at rehearsals

* We have brand new AWESOME visuals to be projected behind us when we play

AND we had everyone ready to go on Sunday including an eager audience ready to dance.

But sadly, it was not meant to be.

The floods in Hebden meant the main street was closed and we'd need to have transported the drums and the people in a boat.

All fingers and toes crossed that the water would magically disappear and we could run the video shoot as planned but it didn't happen.

Cars were underwater (look down the end of this photo.)

We had people coming from all over and we are truly grateful to everyone who was going to make it down today or put themselves on hold for it.

We will reschedule the shoot for ASAP.

We will let you know.

Please add your name to our mailing list if it’s not already down and we can let you know when it’s all happening and what else we have planned...

So here goes...part one of my story of how I ended up playing in Drum Machine

“I’ll never forget seeing Drum Machine play for the first time. It was October 2015 at the Ritz in Manchester. I’d got a ‘pass out’ for the night whilst my husband was looking after my toddler and my 4 year old. Slamboree were headlining and Age of Glass were supporting.

After Slamboree finished their set, Drum Machine came out onto the dance floor. They were a force of about 25 players. It was like nothing I’d seen or heard before. I've always loved drumming bands but these guys were different. All moving in time. Ridiculously funky. Phenomenal. Primal. It felt like I'd been hearing these beats since the dawn of time.

Not for a minute did I imagine that one day, I'd be playing with them. I’d never have put myself forward for such a band given the narrative I’d always told myself; that I had ‘no rhythm.’

The following year, I was at Solfest Festival in Cumbria looking after my kids in the kid’s field when I got chatting to a random guy looking after his kid too.

He asked me what I’d been up to. That year I was running a dance workshop for kids and adults. It was all about having fun, losing your inhibitions and feeling comfortable to move freely.

And he asked me what I’d seen at the festival.

‘OMG there’s this drumming group here. I’ve seen them before at The Ritz in Manchester. They’re amazing. It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen etc etc”

He let me go on about them for a bit and then said,

“I know ‘em. It’s my band!’

"What do you mean it’s your band?” I enquired slightly confused.

There were so many people in it, it didn’t occur to me that it was one person’s band.

He looked a bit bemused.

“Err… I write the tunes. I train everyone. D’you want to be in it?”

Me: “I could never be in a band like that. I’ve got no rhythm. I can’t even clap in time”

“Well, you can dance can’t you?”

Me: “Yeah but I don’t have to keep time with other people when I’m dancing. I just fling my arms and legs around. I’ve tried drumming before and I just can’t do it.”

I’d done a 6 week djembe course as well as played the Atabaque a few times, the tall wooden Afro-Brazillian hand drum used in Capoeira. I’d played Capoeira on and off for 12 years and only got put on the drum a handful of times. I'd soon got taken off. I just didn’t have the concentration to keep time.

“Well, in September” said the random guy who by now had introduced himself as Aid, “I’m taking on 20 new people. Why don’t you be one of the 20?’

“Err, where are you based?”

“Hebden Bridge.”

I looked on Google maps. Hebden Bridge was an hour and quarter from where I lived in Stretford. And I’ve got two kids!

But my husband and I had been looking for something we could do together.

We signed up for 4 weeks.

The first session was epic. We did the intro course which at the time was 12 weeks. At the end of the course, Aid invited us both to be in the band.

Aid’s a great teacher. It’s quite a feat to take someone who wasn’t even confident to clap in time and give them the understanding that practice and repetition really helps.

I literally love everyone in the band. I’ve made some amazing friends and we’ve played some amazing gigs.

Never once, in 3 1/2 years of being in the band have I thought I 'Can't be arsed' to go rehearsals.

Drum Machine has engaged me in a way that nothing else in my adult life ever has.

It’s a beautiful thing.”

The Women's Institute were asking if I might like to deliver a Drum Machine workshop to their 30 or so members.

I was a little unsure as to what to expect. I did feel unnerved by the prospect I would be the only male in a room full of women.

They went through their agenda and I realised it was for their entertainment at the end of the meeting. Of course I would go: I love bringing what we do at Drum Machine to people who wouldn't normally get the opportunity to play.

A few weeks later, in Hebden Bridge Town Hall, I stood in the centre and ran through a brief history of the drum and how Drum Machine was born and how it's roots formed.

Not too much chat and then down to it...

Smashing out some heavy drum n bass grooves, which every member took to with bundles of energy…… It was an amazing night.

So i was very happy to receive an invite to come and deliver another workshop this year.

This time I knew the drill and took a female accomplice, Drum Machine’s Kati Edwards with me, for support and extra energy.

The workshop was just as great. I did a bit of chatting about the history of repetition and how repetition moved through Europe and through South America.

And I talked about about the healing power of repetition and the drum.

We started with a clapping exercise to highlight how by just moving one little note, we can breath new life into a groove.

And we finished off by embracing and celebrating our 4 to the floor roots.

Once all were locked in, the healing was apparent.

The joy in the room was overwhelming and ALL were totally engaged.

Another great workshop.

He currently plays on repinique but has also played snare and bass in the band. We are super excited to interview him for the blog."

I love how Anthony cites the gig at the Ritz in Manchester as one of his favourite ever Drum Machine gigs because that was when I saw Drum Machine for the first time. They blew me away. I couldn't stop talking about them for weeks and never ever did I think that one day I'd be joining them to play! But that's a story for the next blog!

An Interview With Anthony Rae

Q How long have you played in Drum Machine?

Inevitably membership of a large band like dM is a bit of a revolving door, so I’m really proud that I’m one of the 3 remaining members of the 2012 band (plus Aid, our director) that first started playing gigs.

Q Before you were in Drum Machine, did you see them play and if so, what did you think the first time you saw them? And how did you get into playing in Drum Machine?

By chance I saw what I think was the first public performance in 2011 in Hebden Bridge, and then in spring 2012, I turned the corner into St George’s Square and there was a revised lineup. I was hooked, asked Aid if I could join, was auditioned and I got in.

Q Before you were in Drum Machine, did you play an instrument and if so, what did you play?

Drumming’s always been hugely important to me although as, I think, the oldest member in the band - I’m well into my 60's – I’ve maybe got different musical references: the great jazz drummers of the 50's and 60's and above all, the whole Afro-Cuban tradition flowing back and forth from both sides of the Atlantic.

After a 30 year gap since I’d last played drums (but, alas, not having taken lessons. You’ve got to learn your rudiments!), I started playing again with Handmade Samba in 2010.

Just in time to then join Drum Machine.

Q What is it about being in the band that makes you stay?

In my case, if you want to understand the attraction of dM, you need to go back to its roots in the drumming traditions of Africa, as then reforged in the samba culture of Brazil. Anyone who has experienced that multilayered, interlocking rhythmic intensity (here’s one example, from nearby Colombia) will know what it’s like to encounter a music of great force, capable of moving crowds.

What Aid has done is reinvent those traditions in a new form, and it’s exciting to be part of this.

So when you play in Drum Machine you’re a part of that reconnection and redirection.

Then it’s something to do with the present and future of pop music, assailed by digitalisation and mechanisation.

Who needs a band of 20-30 human beings, capable of improvisation and changing polyrhythms, when you can just hire a DJ team playing monotonous 4/4s?

So it’s great to go against the grain and stand up for a music which is acoustic and transmits its energy so directly.

Q Do you have a favourite dM tune?

Berlin, because it really motors, with the different drum sections playing a melody, and it’s got a complicated repinique part which we like to nail.

Q Favourite dM gig ever?

The sounds the most important thing, so it needs an inside acoustic, playing to a club audience. The Ritz on Whitworth St Manchester a few years back comes to mind.

It’s also great that we’ve opened the main stage at Beatherder for the last few years.

Q What would you say to promoters considering hiring Drum Machine for their event?

Don’t put us in a field, where the sound gets lost. It needs to be big, and resonant! And amplified, so the bass knocks you over!

So a huge thank you to Anthony for writing this piece. You are and will always be in our hearts.

The tune Berlin will be on our next album which is due out soon! So watch out for that.

If you'd like to contribute to the dM blog, please send your submission to kati@drummachine.org.uk and if you'd like to enquire about booking us for a gig, please email aid@drummachine.org.uk

A presentation of cabaret of an unusual nature, to bring in the light, in to what has been and continues to be some dark times for the UK. I have known Eleanor And Rosie (the two Brick Box directors) for a long time now and have been inspired by them as women and artists since day one.

They are true believers in the human spirit and its potential and never fail to deliver something special…. So we were honoured to be asked.

It was a collaboration gig: Drum Machine and Miranda Arieh (for whom i play drums). Myself and Miranda's team worked on a truly theatrical performance.

She entered the room in a nuns outfit with vale, with 3 Drum Machiners behind her. Like some kind of funeral march.

She then took to the stage with her band and performed 4 amazing tunes.

At the end of her set, Drum Machine appeared from the wings, looking amazing and dark. A real force that took everyones breath away.

We lit up the room with groove and energy.

The place went mental and in the 10 minutes that we played for, everyone danced to the beat of one drum, of one pulse and of one love.

In those moments, we were all brothers and sisters.

It was amazing.

We smashed out our hypnotic grooves for just a fraction of the night and once we stopped the place erupted and we were gone as quickly as we had arrived.

It was a joyous thing to be a part of and we are definitely looking forward to doing more with The Brick Box team in the near future.

"We are about to play at a summer festival in a small country park. Although not a large festival by today’s standards it has an impressive line-up of artists and bands. It feels like the hottest day of the year, possibly the hottest day ever. Anywhere. Ever.

Today the drum trailer is parked right next to the venue. Result. The band are getting ready, drums out of bags, costume adjustments, pre-show rituals. Taping sticks and fingers. The sun is beating down relentlessly, face paint is drying instantly. The machinists are getting ready to play the hell out of this festival.

Small groups of us are wandering into the marquee, waiting to get on stage soon, always a bit early, a raggle-taggle line of us holding our drums and looking like a post-apocalypse band of itinerants. Like extras from Mad Max. Some of us, adrenaline fuelled, fiddling about with individual pre-show stuff… fidgeting with sticks or bits of costume, shuffling about, sipping water, or tapping a drum quietly in time to the DJ music and hungry to get up there playing.

I’m just wondering how we are all going to get onto that small stage when suddenly we are moving, filing up the narrow steps onto the relatively tiny performance area built for bands of five or six. Twenty five players are shuffled about before settling down into three rows, everyone so close together, more elbows than a jumble sale. I am in the back row with the basses, on the end of the line, my left foot actually on the very edge of the stage. One false move and it could really be the end of the line!

We are bathed in pink light which reflects and twinkles off the shiny parts of our costumes, selfie heaven. As we wait and the drums get mic’d and sound-checked, I decide that I am going to try to make as many of the audience smile back at me as I can. Already got a few and we haven’t even started playing yet.

Then, suddenly it’s time. We’re being counted in. “One.. two.. three.. four..” and on the next ‘one’ the snare drums come to life setting a metronomic gritty pace, soon joined by the piercing sound of the repiniques. It’s like a calling together, an invitation cutting through the hot air. Our audience gets it and is starting to sway to the band.

Next, the kutador section start their rhythmic rumble, adding colour and gestures and maybe a promise of things to come. Expectant. I am watching the audience, smug in the knowledge of what’s coming next and I know there’ll be more smiles.

And then, it happens!

A detonation of bass beats. Heavy beats. Beats that you feel in your chest. And at that same explosive moment the whole band starts moving, stepping with the count and with each other. The maelstrom that is Drum Machine is very much in the house.

The set is really rocking along now, the band moving with its hypnotic sway, the edge of the stage is precarious and I’m looking for the softest landing in case I miss my footing.

Meanwhile the tent has miraculously filled up, packed to bursting and overflowing with the seething mass moving with our beats. Blissed to the trance. Boy it’s hot in here. In more sense than one.

Time seems to distort and dissolve now as our four sections weave their collective rhythms into one. Seamlessly melding into the groove, transcending, meandering through the breaks and drops, all expertly guided and Aided by the Man with the Plan.

And then we can all feel that we’re heading to the finale. Every beat, every gap filled as 50 sticks drumroll us toward the crescendo, loud… louder… loudest, keeping it going, how long can we all keep this up? And then finally, fi-nal-ly, following the thousands of beats that have led up to this… the band is as one as we hit the very last beat. The One. The last one, altogether, on the one.

The audience ignite. They are whooping and whistling, waving their arms, cheering, making almost as much noise as we did. Most of all, a tent full of smiles. Our work here is done!

(Except it isn’t, for in two hours we shall be lucky enough to do it all again)"

By Tony Webber

A HUGE thank you to Tony for writing this creative piece!!!

We note the line near the end ‘…guided and Aided by the Man with the Plan’ that the capitalisation of Aided is deliberate :-)

I was playing in a punk band with her fella, Jon. Top bloke. Outrageous player. Skank Agenda. That band was a lot of fun.

Even back then, as a budding producer, drummer, percussionist, all round explorer and adventurer of anything and everything funky and/or melodic….. the first time i heard her, i knew she was the real thing. Like the first time i heard Tom York, Nick Cave, Regina Spekta, Kate Bush…..But she has elements of all sorts now. Elton John even, Lady Gaga and something that is just hers and for me, someone into lyrics, I think she is one of the cleverest lyricists around today. And not up your arse clever. Much more beautiful crafted and delivered without one shred out doubt of their origin and integrity. It's fair to say. I fuckin love what she does.

Anyway, a few years later and me and Miranda have finally got the whole band together. And made an album and released it. YAY. Here it is on Spotify.

It's currently made up of some serious players. I think lots of people will know of the band called Maia. Killer band. If you haven’t heard them, check THIS..

Maia will always be one of my favourite bands. Tom Clegg, singer and main writer for Maia, is now on keys.

In the band are Tom, myself and Miranda. We are working on the next album together. It's very exciting.

So this coming TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19th the Miranda Arieh band (with me on kit) and Tom and the gorgeous Jen on heavy bass and Lisa blowing sax and providing angelic backing vocals are performing her whole show, at the Trades club in Hebden bridge for FREE (pay as you feel).

She

makes you feel like the big sister you really need at times when she talks on stage.

She’s UNIQUE. And one of my closest friends.

Reading this gave me goosebumps all over. I think Joe's done a fantastic job of putting into words what being in this band is like.. I resonate with so many of his points.

Here we go...

"They say you can choose your friends but not your family but with Drum Machine you get both.

Not being a natural drummer, musician or even being able to tap my feet in time, I find Drum Machine a real challenge mentally and physically.

With Aid's teaching style plus the support and encouragement I get from the gang, I was able to achieve something I thought was unachievable.

The camradery is second to none and you're always made to feel welcome and valued as a team member. There is always someone to help if you're struggling either personally or with band related issues.

The gigs and festivals we play are awesome to be part of and always strengthen the bonds between the team.

Also being part of such a large group makes it comfortable for those less confident members whilst on stage.

Add to this, our band leader is a musical genius meaning that the gigs we play are absolute stomping live dance sets.

All in all, Drum Machine is an element of my life that I am deeply proud to be part of and an effort that is definitely worth the pay off.

Viva DM!"

So a huge thank you to Joe Duffield for writing this blog and for generally being a total superstar member of the band.

Joe runs a small independent screen printing service based just outside Leeds No Brand Printing and makes all our DM T-shirts and hoodies.

It truly was a spectacular event; the fireworks were next level with laser accompaniment and set to a booming soundtrack. It really epic!

We provided the warm up to Arcadia's Lords Of Lightning performance. If you haven't seen these guys, they stand on massive silver podiums above the crowd and fire lightning from their hands and heads and from their staffs; it's new heights of awe inspiring entertainment.

We had 8 players with us from Drum Machine Bristol so thank you to them. As always, it was great to play with you.

We build up to a fantastic 3rd set where Aid got all the audience clapping rhythms in the middle of our performance. The crowd loved it.

A huge thank you to Slammin' Events who looked after us really well and provided the logistics to make the event happen.

10,000 youths not entirely dressed for the cold weather, 4 massive indoor arena and 50 big name DJ's.

We left Hebden Bridge at 5AM on the Saturday morning

The band had great time and were looked after so well by the crew at Brothers Cider.

After each of our three gigs, they brought us warm Toffee Apple Cider provided by Brothers. It was gorgeous and MUCH appreciated by the band.; probably my favourite cider ever!

It was windy, cold, wet and muddy but we still had a brilliant time.

There were a few festivals goers that declared us Best Act Of The Day. So that was nice :-)

This week's fantastic blog comes courtesy of Doug Lyon. Doug has probably seen Drum Machine play more times than anyone else! He has followed the band from the start taking videos of performances and now he plays Bass in the band!!!

Thank you so much Doug for taking the time to write this brilliant piece...

"'Trance' has become known as an EDM musical genre. It is though a very ancient concept I suspect, understood and deliberately sought out since humans stared into the flames and hit things to dance around a fire millennia ago.

Trance states may be meditative or ecstatic, or both I guess...

Collective trance states and the experience within that can be known as 'liminal.' Liminality is the state whereby through an induced collective experience the individual loses their sense of self and becomes One, or At One with a mass. Like the height of a rave or a big gig where everyone peaks simultaneously.

DRUM MACHINE have always induced this in me. So much so that family and dear friends, playing in the band almost immediately dissolve into that black slab of pulsating energy, and the individuals within it melt away in the entrancing sway.

I was Drum Machine's video documenter from the very start. Here is a video I made of Drum Machine at the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge with Mental Elf on NYE. I made this video as a psychedelic experience in itself to match the live one, which for me IS a hypnotic and psychedelic state of trance. A chance to space out but simultaneously lock in. Trance dance.

As an audience member it is a matter of seconds before the hypnotic sway takes me away, and the mighty wall of sound quietens everything else in my mind. The visual block of black becomes one mass, and the machine takes over. It's delicious.

As a fan, video documenter and recently bass drum player I adore that sense of dissolving into the live DM experience. It's not like any other band. I have seen thousands of bands since being a young punk in '77 and played in several other percussion based bands. The only band I would compare DM to in their shamanic strength is the inimitable Killing Joke - no ordinary band, still improving with age and endlessly keeping that simple and effective strength and groove.

I think I can personally claim to have seen DM play more than any other person as a fan, filmed days’ worth of footage and now played many many gigs.. The experience is almost always the same whatever the very diverse contexts we play in. Whether it be a main stage, in a field or a night club, whoever the audience are, Drum Machine call people in. We start the party.

(Bestival start the party video link https://youtu.be/W4H9LCmCOGk )

There isn't any other band I've seen over a hundred times and feel as entranced still as I did the first time. It's a magical mystical thing, I'm endlessly delighted to be part of. Numerous incarnations, members and musical tweaks over around a decade, and I suspect and hope DM will continue to evolve and dissolve for years to come.

My name is Aid.

I run Drum Machine and will be teaching the upcoming Drum Machine Recruitment 8 week course starting Friday 25th October.

I have to say, i am very excited about it.

I always am when it comes to these kind of teaching environments.

I find them addictive. There is a real spark of electricity and life that flows through the people.... me included.

Nobody really knows anyone.

The only thing that draws them there is the drum and the want/ need to learn something new.

Something that has somehow reached out to them.

The drum has found them and here they are.

It's a beautiful thing and I love it.

We have been dancing and healing ourselves and our communities through repetition of rhythm since the dawn of time.

My aim is to tap into that energy.

That is what Drum Machine is about.

That is what I am about and it is what I try to put into the courses.

(I hope) they are exciting, energetic, hypnotic, powerful, exhausting and energising at the same time.

The drum and the rhythms it brings have taught me more about myself than anything in this life (apart from my 7 year old daughter maybe…. LOL) .

They have saved my life on so many occasions.

Healed my hurts.

Made me cry. Made me laugh my head off.

Forced me tip my head to the stars and give thanks……….

There is no room in my head and therefore, in my class for baggy beats and I will take you on a journey that avoids them at all costs.

We are a machine that produces a healing, rolling movement of noise.

So come with an open heart to grow and a willing body to sweat and blister and we will unlock a few things.

I promise.

I love what I do and I love to share it.

Let's do it.

I asked Aid if we could nail down the characteristics of the kind of person who's in Drum Machine. And I discovered it's actually really hard to do because we're ALL so different.

But... it works.

In fact, that's why it works!

Drum Machine are intergenerational.

Our players span 7 decades.

Some of us LOVE to party and others would rather sit out.

Some love to get involved with the costume or the make-up and others stay on the periphery.

But all who come want to be part of something.

They want to learn something new.

They LOVE the music; the funky, hypnotic sound and the visual spectacle that is unmistakably and unapologetically Drum Machine.

They LOVE the look and the sound.

They LOVE the variety of gigs we do.

From massive music and contemporary arts festivals like Boomtownfair or Beatherder to events such as Keighley Arts and Film Festival or Rotherham Diversity Festival.

And they love the family that is Drum Machine.

Here, James Willis Davies who plays in the Kutador section describes seeing Drum Machine for the first time and explains what Drum Machine means to him...

"I first saw Drum Machine play in the Trades years ago and was instantly blown away by the energy, performance and uniqueness of the sound.

I wanted to be part of it and kept telling people about it.

Then, I saw the ad for the recruitment drive and I knew it was my chance.

Nervously I attended as I'm not too good with new situations and new people.

3 years later, being part of the Drum machine family has really helped my confidence and socialising issues and I couldn't imagine not being in DM.

Everyone is amazing and friendly and really lovely and obviously Aid is an absolute genius when it comes to the beats and how to get it over in a way

everyone will understand."

So a huge thank you to James for your awesome submission. It's so lovely to hear this account of why you like being in the band. Massive love <3

So if you'd like to join, we have a recruitment drive coming up.

If you're sat of the fence, why not give it a go?.. If you've never drummed before it's ok. Just a desire to do something awesome will do. Aid will train you up.

I wasn't even confident I could clap in time when I started in Drum Machine 3 years ago but it turns out that practice really helps.

Who knew!

It’s always a great crowd for us and nice to see so many familiar faces.

I've never seen a crowd go from 0-60 in such a short time. When we started the tent was full of people chatting and by the time we'd finished, pretty much everyone was dancing. That's what I love about Drum Machine!

The "Drum Machine" chants as we were setting up were funny. Massive love to the Colne lot for that :-)

And the guy at the front leading a exercise stretch routine so we could 'warm up'. We might just build that in to our self care regime.

Boombox circus really go to town with all the performance and walkabout acts. It was the first time we've had a dancing lobster in the audience to my knowledge!

Great night. Thanks All. We'll look forward to the next one. x

If any of you have any comments, photos or videos of Drum machine from the night or if you fancy writing a review of watching Drum Machine play, please email them to kati@drummachine.org.uk

So this is exciting! The plan was to relaunch the Drum Machine blog at the beginning of December.

But…

drum roll please. . . . . . . . . . . we are starting early!! In September!!!

This preview is to give people a flavour of what the Drum Machine blog is all about.

You can see whether you’d like to contribute and how you might do that should you wish to!

This is the first of three example blogs.

I can honestly say in three years of being in Drum Machine when it comes to rehearsal every Wednesday 7-10PM in Hebden Bridge, I’ve never once thought, ‘Can’t be arsed!’

If I’m exhausted before I get there, I always come away feeling energised.

I love the people and the tunes, the mental agility that is playing and the head fuck that is when you just don’t get it.

I move heaven and earth to get there and I know many others do the same. There’s nothing quite like it.

So I’m not exactly sure who’s going to be reading this:

Perhaps you play in the band?

Or used to?

Perhaps you’d like to come along to the beginner’s course starting in October and try out for the band? Drum Machine are recruiting!

Maybe you’re an experienced drummer and are looking for a new outlet? Get in touch.

Perhaps you’ve played with us before and are considering coming back. (We’ve got some phat new tunes and when we go over old ones, you’ll have all the muscle memory!) Get in touch and we can figure out when you can come along

Perhaps you’ve seen us in action and want to find out where we’re next playing? Here is the gig list. Bring your mates, you know the ones who are going to love us ? We can't wait to see you.

Maybe you’re a gig promoter who is looking to book us for a performance or a workshop? Our EPK for performances is here. And our EPK for workshops is here.

Perhaps you fund community projects and are look for diverse, inclusive and creative projects to fund

Perhaps you’re looking for some Drum Machine merchandise. We will be opening our online shop for T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and CD’s soon. Before then if you desperately want something, please let us know.

Our new online SHOP "Drum Machine Inspired" will be opening soon with Drum Machine Inspired accessories, jewellery, clothes, art and more.

So whatever your reason for being here is, thank you. I hope you will love what is to come…

I have had three submissions for the blog so far and they have all been absolutely brilliant!

People play with Drum Machine for all kinds of reasons but if you have any doubt as to the healing power of Drum Machine or the amazingness of our community, read on.

“I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2010 after months of tests and investigations. I had been struggling with my health for years previous to this. With strong medication I usually manage my symptoms well but occasionally MS takes over and I have to take time to recover. I was going through a divorce in 2015 and my friends decided to take me out for the evening to cheer me up.

THAT was when I heard the machine.

I couldn’t believe my ears-the sound was incredible. Drum Machine entered and I couldn’t believe how the sound made me feel.

It was the best thing I had ever heard and I instantly felt like a different person.

A few weeks after, I saw that drum machine were recruiting.

I felt like I needed to be a part of this band.

Having never played an instrument before I was sure they’d just ask me to leave.

I completed the beginners course auditions and I couldn’t believe it when I received an email afterwards to say I was IN!

YES! 3 years later and still loving it more than anything.

When I play in the band I feel AMAZING. I feel like I could take on the world.

MS doesn’t exist when Drum Machine are playing. The sound is hypnotic and it takes away my pain.

My legs work, I can see again and I feel incredible!”
